It's still basically a combination of the old Be a Pro and Be a Manager modes, fifa 16 account for ps4 where you roll through the season playing matches, dodging or accepting loan and transfer requests and getting the odd rollicking for your behavior on the pitch, and as before, you can choose whether to play matches from the viewpoint of just the one player or play with the whole team. The latter will be most people's choice, but playing in just the one position can be interesting, really making you think about where you need to be and what you need to do to make the most of every opportunity, while creating opportunities for others.
Given that a lot of the attention for this year’s game was focused on visuals, presentation, and gameplay, it’s not too surprising that the modes have remained relatively stagnant. All the usual suspects are here, from Career to FIFA 16 Ultimate Team coins, but most of the changes for FIFA 16 are slight. There’s an option to loan players in FUT 16, but it’s certainly not a game-changer. Same goes for the ability to set different team lineups and switch between them on the fly in Career. Those who were satisfied with last year’s modes with be equally pleased here, but know that the big changes are nowhere to be found.
Scoring helps drive a lot of the game's emotion, of course, and scoring gets a lot of help this year with new momentum-based ball physics. Defenders and the goalkeeper will get in the way of more shots, but their rebounds will be less predictable and more apt to bounce further away. In past editions, the absence of momentum meant balls would stop dead and fall to the earth once they hit something; that made it easy for the defense to take possession of missed shots, and thus shot opportunities were almost too precious. The chance to get a second bite at the apple is nice, knowing the scoring chance I so carefully created doesn't go entirely to waste if I can keep the ball low and try to play a rebound.
Everything's a lot more intense because of this, too. Last year, it was often incredibly hard to shake off defenders, who would stick to your player like glue if you got too close. Here, while controlling a pacey player, you can get into a tangle with the opposition, turn with the ball, and sprint away like a madman. Of course, it's something that's easier said than done, but it feels more realistic nevertheless. It would be churlish to say that FIFA 16 doesn't have its faults. We find the menus and game options are overly familiar as one example. But even so it's the pinnacle of footie games.
But it is on the pitch during play, with the ball at your players' feet, that you will understand how far EA has come with a series that is an open love letter to the beautiful game. FIFA 16 is just that: a beautiful game. Despite the wealth of new options, I am left wanting for a few more features. I wish there was a World Cup mode, instead of having to wait for the official FIFA World Cup game to come out every four years. Some more tournaments and enhanced League customization options to promote unique world competitions wouldn't hurt either, and I would have liked to see a few more online options for filtering teams or types of players when choosing opponents.
My problems with FUT 16 this year came from the stability of the service. Maybe this is just a near-launch problem, but the card store regularly didn’t load for me, I lost single player tournament progress after playing a few matches several times. That’s right, I’d get halfway through an offline tournament and boot the game up again only to find the tournament incomplete and I’d need to restart.
