The one new feature in FIFA 16 we haven't quite seen enough of an effect from, and one much touted by EA, is the "emotion engine". Players heads drop when their team goes behind, and we've seen strikers have a right old paddy in the box when they miss a sitter, but if that affects them later in the game, it's only subtle, we feel. Far more effective in changing the way the game ebbs and flows is the new ball spin system. With a football now spinning authentically, bouncing off the ground, legs, goalkeepers' hands and other objects depending on the spin on it at the time, you'll find your tactics and techniques having to change even during the same match. FIFA 16 Players who exhibit great control one minute might lose the ball the next because of a weird bounce. It is, quite simply, a game changer. And in a good way.

That being said, I'd still like to see A.I. players react more aggressively when you call them in defensive support, as well as have more awareness of their own teammates so there's less bunching and bumbling. Basically, you’ll lose control of how the set piece is taken but instead you get to engage in a physical battle for position and call for the pass when you want it. It won’t always come to you but there’s great delight in using this system to create space for yourself and just as much joy in using your greater control over a player’s movement to create that space for someone else.

The main changes in FIFA 16 from a gameplay perspective come with the goalkeepers and the shooting. Goalkeepers are supposed to have new animations, reactions and be “next-gen.” Well, if by next-gen EA Canada means that they’re superhero-like the one minute and completely incompetent the next, then mission accomplished. It’s almost as if the shooting has been revamped to cater for these new goalkeepers as well, who on numerous occasions I beat from 30 plus yards with a floaty top corner shot. Did they shuffle back and try and save it? No. More often than not they just stood still and watched it go over their heads like a cat with a yarn of wool dangling above their head would do. They can save from point blank range without a second thought though, which when you think about it, is completely nuts.
